Civil Rights and Social Justice Issues as Reflected in Comic Books

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Popular media is often a reflection of the events and issues that are occurring when they are being created, and comic books are no exception. By exploring how civil rights and social justice issues have been portrayed in comic books and how writers and artists have been influenced by these movements, we can get a greater understanding of how young audiences are first introduced to these important issues. During the panel we will see how early African American characters were handled and often mishandled, as well as how issues such as women's rights, LGBTQQAI rights and people with disabilities have been addressed.
